Double Flanged Rail Wheels

(12 products)

Precision Double Flanged Rail Wheels

Double flanged rail wheels are designed for applications that require lateral guidance on steel rails – including overhead cranes, gantry systems, rail-guided transfer carts, and automated guided vehicles (AGVs). The two flanges (one on each side of the tread) keep the wheel centred on the rail, preventing derailment even under eccentric loading or in high-cycle applications. Correct wheel selection is critical to the safe operation and long service life of any rail-guided system, and our technical team can assist with specifying the right wheel for your application.

Materials & Sizes

Merlin Industrial supplies these wheels in cast iron (GGG 50) for applications with speeds up to 1 m/s, or forged steel (42CrMo4) for higher speeds and heavier loads where greater toughness is required. Diameters from 125 mm to 630 mm. Tread hardness HRC 40–55 depending on material and duty. All wheels are dynamically balanced and supplied with either plain bore, taper roller bearings, or pre-lubricated sealed bearings to suit the installation.

Rail Profiles & Loads

Standard wheel treads are flat or slightly crowned depending on the application. Flange geometry is optimised for BS 11 (30 kg/m) and 40A rail profiles. For other rail profiles, we can machine wheels to order. Depending on diameter and material, static load ratings range from 2 tonnes to 25 tonnes per wheel. For example, a 250 mm cast iron wheel on BS 11 rail supports up to 8 tonnes static. Steel wheels are induction hardened to HRC 55 on tread and flange; cast iron wheels have a chill-cast tread for improved wear resistance. Customised keyways and shaft collars are available on request. Contact our engineering team with your rail profile, load, and speed data for a fully tailored recommendation. Our engineering team is available to assist with full wheel specification, including rail profile matching, bearing selection, and load verification calculations.
